WKO (ATES)

WKO explained

Heat and Cold Storage (WKO) is a way to heat and cool buildings energy efficiently. Good for the environment, future-proof and reliable. In a WKO installation, soil energy is used to heat and cool buildings. Using soil energy is a sustainable solution that significantly reduces the consumption of fossil fuels for energy generation.

How does an ATES installation work?

Groundwater in deeper soil is used as energy storage. Part of a WKO installation is a heat exchanger that stores cold water in a cold source in winter and warm water in a warm source in summer. In summer, a building can be cooled by pumping up the cold water. In winter, a building is heated by pumping the hot water and using a heat pump to heat it to the desired temperature. A heat pump can make heat for both heating and hot tap water.

There are different types of ground source systems, such as open systems and closed systems. WKO systems are open source systems. WKO doublet, mono-source are examples of open source systems. Vaanster supplies complete energy installation, consisting of wells and a complete heat pump installation with piping up to the delivery set and energy meter at the customer's premises.

A delivery set is installed in each home. This is where the hot and cold water enters a house through the pipework and from here the heat and cold is distributed within the house.

Solar panels on the roof provide renewable electricity that is used for the heat pumps.
